  • Get Your Pool Cover Before Cool Weather Returns

    swimming pool covers

With the arrival of September comes the arrival of fall, bringing with it chilly weather. Many pool owners with outdoor pools will soon be winterizing their pool for the cold months and protecting their pool with swimming pool covers.

A Pool Cover for Every Pool

If you need a high-quality pool cover for the fall, Pure Pool is the perfect place to shop. Our wide selection of pool covers includes covers for in-ground and above-ground pools. We also offer a variety of shapes for rectangular, round or oval-shaped pools as well as a variety of colors. If you happen to have an unusually-shaped custom pool, our friendly staff is available to help you find the right pool cover solution.

    Summer and Winter Pool Covers

When purchasing a pool cover, pay attention to whether it is designed for summer or winter. While summer pool covers are designed to keep water from evaporating during hot weather, winter pool covers help protect the water in your pool from freezing and causing damage to your pool. It is important to select a seasonally-appropriate pool cover to properly protect your pool

One of our most popular options is the Midwest Canvas in-ground winter pool cover, which comes in different colors, sizes and shapes to suit every need. If you have an above-ground pool that you are prepping for winter, we also recommend an air pillow to place beneath your pool cover in the center of your pool. This will hold the cover slightly elevated, keeping water, snow, ice and other debris from stacking up on top of it.

  • Nation’s First Natural Public Swimming Pool in the Works

    natural public swimming pool

In a previous blog post, we talked about natural swimming pools, the new pool trend sweeping the nation that uses aquatic plants and biological filtration equipment to keep pools clean and sanitized instead of traditional pool chemicals. While this international trend is taking off at private residences in the U.S., our nation will soon see its first natural public swimming pool.

The natural pool is slated to be built in Minneapolis as part of a major renovation for Webber Park to improve recreational opportunities in the city, according to the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB). The innovative pool will feature a natural water filtration system and will be available to the general public. So while the public pool will have the look of a normal pool, it will have the “feel” of a lake.

    Details about the Natural Pool

When complete, locals will be able to enjoy a 4,500-square-foot wading area, 16,800-square-foot swimming area, a lap pool with five lanes and even an area for diving, with a depth of about 13 feet, according to MPRB. While the pool was originally scheduled to be completed late this summer, the pool has unfortunately experienced construction delays that will push its opening to next June, KARE 11 reported.

Design and consulting work for the natural public pool was provided by German firm BioNova Natural Pools and Landform. The new pool will replace an aging concrete pool and wading pool and offer triple the recreation space without any of the chlorine you would typically expect in a public pool.

Because of the special nature of the pool, the MPRB had to get special approval by the Minnesota state legislature to build the pool and regulate it as a public bathing beach, which will be routinely monitored for E. coli, Pool & Spa News reported in December 2012, when planning for the pool had begun in earnest.

  • Hidden Pool in Desert Is Innovative Art Project

    Hidden Pool

A hidden swimming pool locked away in the Mojave Desert is being described as an interactive art exhibit, according to ABC News, but it’s also a bit like a social experiment. The Social Pool art project was completed June 20 and is the creation of Austrian artist Alfredo Barsuglia. The installation was designed to explore how far out of the way people will go to experience leisure, the article explained.

    Getting to the Hidden Pool

The small swimming pool is open to the public, but there’s a bit of a catch. In order to swim in the pool, you must first obtain one of only four keys available to unlock it, and then you must use GPS coordinates to find its remote location in the Southern California desert. The keys and coordinates are housed at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles, the article noted.

If all four keys have already been taken, then the next hopeful swimmer has no other choice but to wait their turn, as there are no reservations. If a key is available, the borrower has only a brief 24 hours to find and enjoy the pool. The pool isn’t exactly easy to get to either—getting to the pool requires travel on foot from the nearest road. Social Pool users also agree to abide by certain rules, such as not making copies of the key and keeping the pool’s coordinates a secret.

    Hidden Pool Details

The Social Pool is 11x5 with a white exterior and minimalist design, so while it may be tricky to find, it’s not difficult to spot if you know where to find it. People curious about the project can visit the pool any day of the week through Sept. 30. You can learn more about this fascinating art installation at Social-Pool.com.

  • Latest Pool Trend: Natural Swimming Pools

    Natural Swimming Pools

Natural swimming pools are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. and Canada as consumers continue to seek out “green” pool alternatives that do not require traditional pool chemicals. These natural pools differ from other pools because they are 100% free of chemicals. Instead, aquatic plants provide filtration, and helpful bacteria compete for resources with harmful or unwanted microorganisms, making the water safe for swimming, according to Luxury Pools.

How Do Natural Swimming Pools Work?

Natural swimming pools feature both an area for swimming and a separate area called a “regeneration zone,” which resembles a small water garden. This water garden contains plants that naturally filter the water by pulling nutrients that algae use for food. Since algae have competition for food in the natural pool, their growth is kept under control.

Such pools also include biological filtration equipment, which pushes water through a filter containing anaerobic and aerobic bacteria that do their part to clean the water as well. The water in such pools is also in constant motion, promoting a healthy swimming environment. Owners of natural pools are essentially swimming in freshwater that has its own mini ecosystem.

How Do You Maintain Natural Swimming Pools?

One of the drawbacks of natural swimming pools is you will always have at least some algae growth and sediment build-up, just like you might expect in natural bodies of water. Also, as with any pool, you’ll still need to empty skimmer baskets, skim the surface of the water for any debris with pool leaf skimmers and use swimming pool cleaners to vacuum up any debris on the pool floor.

Algae build-up is removed with pool brushes, pool vacuums or robotic pool cleaners, Luxury Pools explained. In addition, you will need to maintain the aquatic plants that help filter your natural pool by cutting them back when they grow too tall or replanting as necessary.

  • Master Pools Guild Releases Top 10 Pool Trends for 2014

    pool design trends

Alternative finishes, glass tile, and LED lighting are the top three trends in pool design this year, according to the 2014 Top Ten Trends in Swimming Pool and Spa Design released by the Master Pools Guild.

This is the second year the Guild has released a trends ranking after asking pool and spa professionals to weigh in on what consumers find most desirable in new pool construction and pool remodels.

Knife Edge Design & Fire Features

Other pool design trends for 2014 included lounging ledges, clean lines, knife edge design, and fire features. Knife edge design in a pool is where the water rests at the same level as the deck of the pool and flows into a slot edge at the pool’s perimeter, producing a seamless, mirror-like effect. Fire features encompass everything from exterior fireplaces, fire pits and fire bowls to highly customized fire features.

Falling Water Features & Illusion Spas

Rounding out the remaining pool and spa design trends are falling water features, illusion spas, and customized outdoor environments in which the pool is the centerpiece.

Illusion spas are either attached or stand-alone spas where the water sits at the level of the spa edge, creating a mirror effect similar to knife edge design in a swimming pool. Illusion spas generally have a perimeter-overflow feature in which the water that spills over the edge flows into a narrow trough where it is later recycled back into the spa or channeled into an accompanying pool. While water is constantly flowing over the edge, the movement of the water isn’t noticeable, which contributes to the spa’s smooth sense of tranquility.

  • April Declared Adult Learn to Swim Month

    adult learn to swim month

Lack of swimming ability is one of the major reasons unintentional drowning claims the lives of so many people in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In fact, the CDC reports that an estimated 37% of American adults can’t swim the length of a pool. To try to reduce the number of needless drowning deaths, the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation has declared the month of April as Adult Learn to Swim Month.

In support of this initiative to encourage adults with little to no swimming ability to learn basic swimming skills, the governors of the states of Washington, Indiana, New Jersey, Nebraska and Maine have issued proclamations to encourage their residents to participate.

Resources for Adult Learn to Swim Month

U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS), which oversees the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation, provides a wealth of resources on its website to connect people to adult learn to swim programs in their area. The Places to Swim tool lets you search by state for any place you can swim within a 25 mile radius of your zip code.

In addition, USMS offers a list of Swimming Saves Lives partners, many of which offer swimming lessons for adults. These partners have demonstrated a commitment to teaching adults how to swim and have earned grants from the foundation for their ongoing efforts.

Last but not least, adults who have not learned to swim because of a fear of deep water are encouraged to look into the Miracle Swimming program designed to help people conquer their fears and gain confidence in their swimming abilities. Click here for locations of beginning classes for Miracle Swimming lessons.

Why Don’t People Learn to Swim?

Adults may not have learned to swim for a variety of reasons, including coming from a culture where swimming isn’t commonplace, growing up in an area with limited or no access to swimming pools, or an intense fear of water, according to the Wall Street Journal. Fear of swimming may have arisen because of a close call with drowning in a person’s youth or because their parents drilled into them that swimming was dangerous.

Adults in particular may shy away from learning to swim due to embarrassment of needing to learn so late in life, which is why adults are encouraged to learn from instructors who have experience teaching skills to adults.

  • Why Shower Before Swimming?

    why shower before swimming

Most people have heard that showering before swimming is a good idea, but how many people actually do it? Not as many as you would think, if a recent poll is any indication. More than 40% of adults in the U.S. do not shower before going swimming, according to a survey by the Water Quality & Health Council.

Why Is It Important to Shower Before Swimming?

Rinsing off with soap and water before taking a dip in the pool is not only a good idea to keep your pool clean and sanitized, but it’s also an important step to protecting public health. A hygienic pre-swim shower helps keep dirt, sweat, body oils, cosmetics and other bodily contaminants from entering the pool.

A pre-swim shower (and trip to the restroom) is especially important for children who are not yet fully potty trained.

Why Do People Skip the Pre-Swim Shower?

Many people skip the pre-swim shower because they mistakenly believe that chlorine in pools instantly kills all germs. While chlorine does do an excellent job of killing bacteria, certain types of bacteria take minutes, hours and in some cases days to kill off, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). If this contaminated water is accidentally ingested while swimming, it can cause recreational water illnesses.

How Can I Keep My Pool Sanitized?

Best practices for keeping your pool healthy include asking everyone who swims in your pool to shower first, taking young children for bathroom breaks every hour, and making sure that you and your pool guests do not swim if they are ill.

Make sure you routinely measure the chlorine level of your pool and check the pool’s pH is at recommended levels for germ-killing power, the CDC explains. Pure Pool not only offers pool chlorine and bromine to keep your pool clean and sanitized, but also offers swimming pool test strips and kits that help you determine if you need to adjust your pool’s chlorine level or pH.

  • 5 Ways to Make Pools Safer for Swimmers

5 Ways to Make Pools Safer for Swimmers

Swimming pools are a pleasant oasis for relaxation and exercise. Unfortunately, they also present some unique hazards to pool guests, including the risk of drowning or becoming entrapped in a pool’s suction components. Here are five ways to make your swimming pool a safer place.

    Have Safety Equipment on Hand

    Pure Pool_life hook

Having the right pool and spa safety products on hand can mean the difference between life and death. We recommend pool life hooks with a shepherd’s crook wide enough to safely encircle a swimmer in distress and lift them to safety. Life rings are also helpful tools to keep a struggling swimmer afloat. You might also consider having life vests on hand for guests who are not strong swimmers and water wings for young children who have not yet mastered swimming.

    Install Anti-Entrapment Equipment

Anti-entrapment equipment protects swimmers from getting trapped or injured by your pool’s suction system. A safety vacuum release system works by eliminating dangerous vacuum levels at all suction outlets. Another way to mitigate the risk of suction entrapment is to have an emergency shut off button that can be pressed to stop all operation of your pool’s pumps immediately if someone becomes entrapped.

    Install a Pool Alarm

A high-quality pool alarm can alert you if a toddler, a small pet, or even an intruder ventures into your pool.

    Fence Your Pool Well

A physical barrier between your pool and the outside world discourages young children in your neighborhood from attempting to enter your pool while you are away. A self-closing, self-latching gate is paramount to keeping curious little ones from wandering into your pool area. Swimming pool covers are also a good idea when your pool is not in use.

    Rope off the Deep End

Young children don’t always know where the shallow section of the pool ends and the deep end begins. You can prevent them from getting in over their heads by setting up a life line to clearly show which section of the pool is safe for swimming.

  • Bees in Saltwater Pools Can Be a Headache

Bees in Saltwater Pools Can Be a Headache

While chlorine pools remain popular, many pool owners have transitioned to saltwater pools in hopes of using fewer chemicals to keep their pools sanitized. However a problem has cropped up for saltwater pool owners — bees seem to flock to such pools in droves!

While chlorine pool owners are accustomed to bees, wasps and other winged insects stopping by on occasion for a drink from their pools, saltwater pool owners are lighting up online forums with reports that their pools are being overrun with bees.

    Why Do Bees Love Saltwater?

Honeybees are drawn to saltwater because they need the salt both to fuel their own metabolic processes and to fuel the development of their larvae, according to LiveScience. As you might imagine, they are also drawn to sugar, which reflects their search for nectar and why they will hover over an unattended glass of lemonade.

New research shows that bees are surprisingly more sensitive to salt than they are to sweets, the LiveScience article explained. Bees, which taste with their feet and antennae, may not even need to land on the surface of water to taste its salt content. Researchers believe the bees may be able to sense the presence of salt before they land on the water. So a saltwater pool has the potential to become a giant homing beacon for bees if you have a hive or two nearby.

    Potential Solutions

While there’s no surefire way to rid your pool of bees, there are a few steps you can take to mitigate the problem. Covering the pool any time it is not in use is one step. Pure Pool offers a wide variety of swimming pool covers for in-ground and above-ground pools.

Instead of using pesticides to kill off bees that have taken over your pool, mix a quarter cup of dish soap with a quart of water, fill an empty spray bottle with this solution and spray any bees hovering around the pool, advises the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This will kill the bees without adding harmful pesticides to your pool.

Once you’ve dealt with the bees hovering around your pool, you can use a pool leaf skimmer to strain out the bees on the surface of the water. Be sure to dispose of these bees in a sealed bag, as dead bees can emit a scent that attracts more bees.

Spa fragrances can also help you get rid of any chemical smells that cleaning supplies may leave behind and help increase the overall comfort in your hot tub.

    Aromatherapy and the Brain
